Objectives

The second-level discipline of Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics focuses on two main areas: applied linguistics and second language acquisition for its master’s degree programs. The program aims to equip students with the ability to proficiently read literature related to their field in both English and Chinese, while systematically mastering the foundational theories, professional knowledge, and research methodologies of foreign linguistics and applied linguistics. Students will also familiarize themselves with the latest research findings in this discipline both domestically and internationally. They will develop a basic understanding of interdisciplinary fields such as linguistics, logic, education, sociology, psychology, and statistics, thus fostering a global perspective.

Requirements for Candidates

As an essential part of developing high-level talent in Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, the program is open to graduates with bachelor’s degree from accredited universities in China or abroad. Applicants should be in good physical and mental health, possess sound moral integrity, and have a solid foundation in foreign language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing). They are expected to grasp the fundamental theories and research methods in general linguistics and applied linguistics, maintain a rigorous approach to academic research, and aspire to engage in research in Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics.

Curriculum Structure

In alignment with the aforementioned research areas, the second-level discipline of Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics offers three major course modules, leveraging its strengths in applied linguistics research.

“Foundation Courses” Module

This module primarily imparts general foundational knowledge and methodologies common to the first-level discipline of foreign language and literature. The goal is to broaden students’ research perspectives and establish a solid foundation for their specialized studies. It helps students understand the knowledge system and development of the field as well as systematically understand the latest research areas and cutting-edge findings both at home and overseas. Courses offered include “Introduction to Linguistics,” “Overview of Foreign Literature and Culture,” and “Introduction to Translation Studies.”

“Core Courses” Module

This module focuses on courses related to the theories and research methods in applied linguistics and second language acquisition. Its aim is to enhance students’ understanding of professional theoretical knowledge in conjunction with their research interests and topics, enabling them to correctly apply scientific research methods in their studies.

“FeaturedCourses” Module

This module features some interdisciplinary and enrichment courses of general linguistics that align with the strengths of the program and the research expertise of the faculty. The purpose is to broaden students’ horizons, fostering an interdisciplinary mindset and further enhancing their academic proficiency in the field of linguistics. Courses in this module include “Sociolinguistics,” “Semantics,” “Pragmatics,” and so on.
