Objectives
The second-level discipline of translation studies is centered on two research areas, including the Translation in Finance and Economics and literary translation for master’s nurturing. The discipline aims to foster interdisciplinary and high-level translation talents with strong foundation in translation and interpreting and with excellent professional knowledge, both theoretically and practically. The talents with Chinese cultural awareness and international insights will serve China’s major strategies and social needs.
Requirements for Candidates
As an crucial part for high-level talents nurturing in translation studies, the program is open to graduates with bachelor’s degree from accredited universities in China or abroad. Applicants should be in good physical and mental health, possess sound moral integrity and strong sense of social responsibility and commitment, and have a solid foundation in foreign language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing). They are expected to have basic competence in Chinese-foreign or foreign-Chinese translation and interpretation as well as basic theoretical knowledge of translation studies, and aspire to pursue translation research and practice.
Admission is based on performance in CUFE’s Postgraduate Entrance Examination, Program-specific examinations, and Interviews.
Curriculum Structure
Aligned with the program’s objectives and research areas, the program in Translation Studies features three course modules, consisting of“Theory and Methodology,”“Professional Translation & Interpretation Skills,”and “Interdisciplinary Knowledge,”to ensure the dimensional interaction between theory and practice as well as skills and knowledge.
“Theory and Methodology”Module
The module of“Theory and Methodology”delivers foundational theories, specialized knowledge, and research methods in Translation Studies. They equip students with comprehensive understanding of the knowledge structure and evolution of translation, with the supplementation of cutting-edge research areas and research results from China and overseas.
“Professional Translation & Interpretation Skills”Module
The module of“Professional Translation & Interpretation Skills”provides practice, teaching, and research of translation and interpretation in different fields. Based on CUFE’s strengths in finance and economics, the translation practice and research focus on financial texts, including classical and practical finance-related texts. This module aims to strengthen the connection between translation theory and practice by incorporating relevant courses that integrate translation theories, strategies, and techniques into a unified framework, thus enhancing students’overall abilities in translation practice.
“Interdisciplinary Knowledge”Module
The module of“Interdisciplinary Knowledge”takes advantage of the discipline integration. It provides theoretical and practical courses related to adjacent fields such as literature and linguistics. In alignment with our school’s research areas in translation studies, this module also includes knowledge- and skill-oriented courses from other disciplines, such as financial expertise as well as teaching and assessment research.
